IMA OPENLab
Connecting packaging materials, functionality and machine performance
OPENLab is the IMA Group’s global network of technological laboratories and testing areas, supporting packaging innovation from early technical understanding to industrial implementation.
Acting as a hub between packaging material producers and industrial customers, OPENLab connects technical knowledge with practical application, helping transform innovative concepts into production-ready solutions aligned with real market needs.
Tracking emerging materials, regulatory developments, and evolving standards to anticipate their impact on industrial packaging, processes, and machine performance.
By translating early signals into actionable technical insight, OPENLab helps steer development choices, reduce uncertainty, and prepare solutions before change becomes a constraint in packaging design, production processes, and machine technologies.
This activity builds the shared knowledge base that informs OPENLab’s broader development and validation work.
Working alongside customers to assess, fine-tune, and improve the interaction between packaging materials and IMA machines, both when introducing new solutions and when enhancing existing production performance. Through targeted analysis and iterative adjustments, OPENLab helps correct criticalities, optimize process behavior, and achieve higher reliability, efficiency, and consistency on industrial lines.
The objective is not only compatibility, but performance at its best under real operating conditions.
OPENLab collaborates with packaging manufacturers and technology partners to co-develop packaging solutions designed for future materials and industrial-scale production.
By combining material expertise, functional packaging design, and machine constraints, packaging concepts are shaped to be compatible with high-speed, industrial packaging lines.
Feeding technical insight derived from testing activities, customer applications, and upstream collaboration into the broader machine development process.
These inputs complement other sources of technical development and help engineering teams assess potential adaptations, alternatives, or upgrades required by new materials, formats, and packaging requirements.
OPENLab acts as one of the contributors feeding real-world evidence into the broader machine evolution process.
OPENLab’s areas of activity are shared across the entire network.
What differentiates each location is how these activities are enabled in practice. OPENLab relies on a set of core capabilities that support all areas of activity. These capabilities are present across the network but take different forms and levels of specialisation depending on the focus, infrastructure, and role of each location. Together, they allow OPENLab to translate shared objectives into concrete, location-specific industrial outcomes.
Analytical Lab
The Analytical Lab focuses on the detailed analysis of the chemical, physical, and tribological properties of packaging materials and their applications.
These analyses are carried out within OPENLab’s in-house laboratories, specifically equipped with advanced scientific instrumentation and dedicated to material and packaging characterisation. Through characterization of multilayer materials, evaluation of sealing behaviour, and investigation of packaging anomalies, the Analytical Lab supports a deep understanding of how materials behave during processing and use.
This includes the analysis of material composition, sealing and welding performance, mechanical behaviour, and tribological interactions between packaging and machine components.
Test Areas
The Test Areas allow packaging materials, packaging solutions and machine configurations to be tested under conditions that closely reflect real industrial production.
By making IMA machines available for dedicated testing, including reconfiguration where needed, this capability enables thorough pre-validation without disrupting customer production. It supports the assessment of material processability, the evaluation of critical or innovative solutions, and the verification of performance at industrial speed.
Testing activities focus on reducing implementation risks, improving process stability and supporting performance optimisation before industrial deployment.
Competence Center
The Competence Center is OPENLab’s central technical knowledge base, built over time through thousands of real cases, testing activities, and field applications.
It brings together structured data and documented experience on packaging materials, packaging structures, product applications, processability, and machine behaviour. This consolidated body of knowledge allows OPENLab to act as a technical reference point, supporting consistent interpretation, comparison, and informed technical choices across projects and applications.
The Competence Center is further enriched by a network of selected experts and technology partners, extending access to complementary knowledge and emerging technical solutions.
OPENLab operates through a network of locations that share the same areas of activity and core capabilities.
Each location implements these capabilities in a different way, based on its infrastructure, technological focus and the markets it serves.

OPENLab Lugano brings together analytical capabilities and dedicated industrial testing within a single location, supporting packaging evaluation and validation activities in close-to-production conditions.
Active since 2017, the site operates across over 400 m² and hosts an in-house Analytical Lab integrated with dedicated Test Areas equipped with horizontal form-fill-seal machines. This configuration allows material analysis and machine testing to be carried out within the same environment, enabling a continuous and structured evaluation process.
At this location, testing and analysis services can be directly booked, supporting activities related to packaging materials, machine performance and processability. Specific equipment, such as leak detection systems, further supports the assessment of packaging integrity and performance.
Insights generated through analytical and testing activities contribute to the OPENLab Competence Center, a structured technical knowledge base built on thousands of real cases and field experiences. At Lugano, this contribution goes beyond individual projects, combining data from customer activities with internally driven testing and analysis initiatives aimed at deepening the understanding of material behaviour, processability and performance under different operating conditions.
By consolidating and continuously enriching this body of knowledge, OPENLab is able to interpret performance patterns, compare solutions and support informed technical choices. This enables more structured evaluations and, where relevant, practical recommendations that can support optimisation and packaging redesign.
